A Celebration of Streatham!

As we near completion of four new flats in our fantastic Braxted Park project in Streatham, we’ve been spending a lot of time discovering what makes this vibrant part of South West London such a great place to live! We invested here for the strong community, unique personality, young family vibe, eclectic atmosphere and we think you’ll agree – Streatham really does have something for everyone.

Here are our top picks of what makes Streatham so brilliant!

Rookery Café – 37 Streatham Common South SW16 3BZ

Located right on the Streatham Common, the Rookery Café serves delicious food in a gorgeous atmosphere. While we’ve been working on our new flats at Braxted Park, we’ve had many a happy lunchtime here – luckily they are right round the corner! As they say themselves: “Our chefs prepare our food from fresh ingredients delivered daily to the cafe. We cook and bake pretty much everything at the café and take great pride in everything we serve.” Sound good? Trust us, it is!

Streatham Common & its Facilities

Streatham Common, which is just a couple of streets over from beautiful Braxted Park, is a huge public space which is great for a walk or to get back to nature. It’s half grass and half woodlands, within which you will find (next to the café) the Rookery, a formal walled garden which is a haven of peace amidst the London chaos. Inside that you will find Streatham Common Community Garden, which promotes organic gardening and food growth, and aims to protect the wildlife of the area.

The common is also a venue for open-air theatre in the summer, and there are always events going on. If you have young children, you’ll be pleased to know that Lambeth Council have recently spent £800,000 landscaping a new play area, kitting it out with state of the art equipment.

Rabbit Hole Pub – 151-153 Greyhound Lane SW16 5NJ

If you’ve driven through Streatham at all, you must have seen the Rabbit Hole pub. It’s the weirdly wonderful, brightly coloured pub on the corner of Greyhound Lane and Streatham High Road – another venue fortuitously close to Braxted Park! Formally The Greyhound, this pub has been given an Alice in Wonderland makeover, and it is definitely something to behold! It’s been decked out with lively colours and huge, impressive murals on the wall, but more to the point, the independent owners have restored its glorious Victorian features and have created something truly unique. We love it for the atmosphere and the friendly service!

Café Barcelona – 344a Streatham High Road SW16 6HH

The perfectly located Café Barcelona on Streatham High Road has everything: excellent coffee, delicious lunches, freshly baked goods, and it has become one of Streatham’s best live music venues. Conceived by two jazz musicians, they provide a wide range of musical genres and performances including; Flamenco, Brazilian Bossa Nova, independent acoustic musicians and world music. Oh, and we speak from experience: The poached eggs on sourdough with chorizo are phenomenal.

The Mere Scribbler – 426 Streatham High Road SW16 3PX

The Mere Scribbler is a lovely pub with a great vibe to it – we love their décor of exposed brickwork and Victoriana, and the fabulous mural in the cosy, quirky garden. It’s a family-friendly place with a dedicated kids menu, they do a Friday night steak night, 2 for £10 cocktails all day Thursday and after 9pm on Friday and Saturday and a truly spectacular sticky toffee pudding.

The Hideaway – 2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road SW16 2BF

Just round the corner from Streatham Mainline station you’ll find the Hideaway. This fantastic live music venue specialises in jazz, soul and funk, and has been entertaining those in the know for the last seven years. They have also diversified into comedy and now put on regular stand-up comedy nights. Nights can book out here, so we recommend booking tickets in advance!

The Railway Pub – 2 Greyhound Lane

One of our favourite things about the Railway pub is its involvement in the Streatham community – It hosts a Farmers Market a couple of Saturdays every month and runs regular quiz nights, games nights and comedy nights. It also hosts the Streatham Brewing Company microbrewery out the back! We also love its elegant vintage-inspired décor.

The Bull – 498 Streatham High Road

It may be a Young’s pub, but The Bull has the feeling of an independent pub and is an absolute Streatham institution. It was built in 1768, and was taken over by Young’s in 1832, so comes with a fair bit of history behind it – and it shows. It has been so well looked after and we love how you can feel its heritage as you step inside by the way the old has been so carefully balanced with the new. The food is excellent – no standard pub grub here – and we’ve really enjoyed spending a lunch break or two here!

Brickwood Streatham – 292 Streatham High Road

From the historical to the brand new – last year, Streatham got a Brickwood! Like previous models, it’s cosy, often busy and warm and bustling. The coffee is exceptional (and strong!) and the banana bread is the BEST.
